—by Pastor Don Weeks, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Romans 12:11  Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.

2 Timothy 2:15  Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

I chose these two verses because your daily task today is to compose praises to God about school or work. The first Bible verse, tells us how we ought to be when we work: 1.) Not slothful, or lazy; 2.) Fervent in spirit, as in up the tempo and get productive, and, 3.) Work as though you are really serving Christ when you work. Your paycheck is signed by your employer, but your sustenance comes from God.

The second Bible verse, 2 Timothy 2:15 commands us to study the Bible. As in Romans 12:11, we are to work hard at it, study diligently so that we are competent. We must be able to rightly divide the word of truth. How embarrassed and ashamed we would be, if when confronted with a spiritual trial, we failed due to our lack of study.

When you work, do you work hard, or are you lazy? When you study, are you diligent or not so diligent. You say, “But Pastor Don, I am retired. I am not in school, and I haven’t worked in decades.” I understand. You finished your education years ago and have worked a job for decades. Now you are enjoying retirement: Fishing! Golfing! Hunting! Traveling! That is great. And, in addition to all your leisure activities, just think of how much time you have now to study the Word and work for Christ.

No believer is exempt from work and study. But this is the wrong idea. Working for Christ and studying His Word is a gift. Working for Christ means bringing others to Him. Working for Christ means being a friend, caring for others, and imparting what you have learned so that Christ is increased in others. In order to fully do that, you and I will have to continue studying His Word.

Your daily practical task

  • Go to church. Don’t have a church? Again, may I invite you to Antioch? You can find directions here.  Sunday school starts at 10:00 am, Main service starts at 11:00 am.
  • Bring your notebook and consider all the opportunities you have to study and work for Christ so that He may increase in your life and the lives of others.
  • Pray, and ask God to help you compose some praise today for Christ with this theme of work and study. Feel free to interpret the theme has the Lord leads you.

Praise to Christ

I praise you, Savior, for all the work you have done for me.
You formed me before I was born.
You allowed me to live through medical complications.
Thank you for life.
Thank you for my life.

I thank you, Jesus, for the words you have preserved for me.
Pure words, holy words, words of life for me.
I believed your promises.
I believed your warnings.
Because of your work and words I will be with you forever.

I feel the pressure, Lord, to study.
I feel the tension, Lord, to work.
Keep the laziness away from me; my spirit is willing, but you know my flesh.
In spite of my weaknesses, help me Lord to study and work so that you may increase in the lives others. Amen.

Have a wonderful and inspired Lord’s day today!
