Happy Valentine’s Day!
This year I got a great big pile of Valentine cards. They were given to me from our church’s group of little ones that meet in our children’s church service while our main worship hour is happening. These cards were hand-painted by all the cute kids of our church. Most the cards had big, red hearts painted on the inside. Some had big, red, foam heart stickers. All of the cards were precious, even if some of the blobs of paint didn’t resemble a heart. It is a humbling experience for me as a pastor to receive cards like that.
But what is real love? We know that God’s love is real love. The children painted big, red hearts. Could it be that simple? Do the children know something we don’t about God’s love? Let’s look at the characteristics of God’s love. Let’s see if God’s love has anything to do with a big, red heart.
First God’s love is big. It’s huge! When Jesus wanted to show us the size of His love, He stretched out His hands and allowed them to be nailed to an old rugged cross.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
That’s big love! Bigger than the whole, wide world. And, if that’s not a measure of how large His love is, how about this?
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
So His love is big. Bigger than the whole world. His love is really big. Bigger than your sin, my sin, and the sins of the whole world. He is the propitiation, the payment, the atonement of our sin.
Today, when you see a big, red heart, remember how big God’s love is: bigger than the world, and bigger than your sin. Think of how Jesus not only took your sin to the cross, He became sin for you, and then – incredibly – gave you His righteousness when you believed the Gospel.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he (God the Father) hath made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
That is big love! Think about that for a while. Then praise God for His big, big love.
Second, God’s love is red. People don’t like to talk about it much anymore but that doesn’t change the Bible fact: Without the Blood of Jesus, real love is non-existent. It is the precious blood of Christ that makes God’s love crimson red.
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
You can buy your Valentine expensive gifts, if you’ve got the money. You could buy the most expensive gifts in the world. But what your Valentine truly wants is something that money can never purchase. The real love of Christ is blood red, because Jesus gave Himself, His life-blood for us.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Today, when you see a big, red heart, remember how big God’s love is, and remember the color of His love, blood-red.
Lastly, God’s love is for our heart. When we receive Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, he comes to dwell within us. But, do you know where He dwells? You got it! In your heart.
Ephesians 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith…
There you have it. God’s love is big, God’s love is red, and God’s love allows Jesus Christ to dwell in your heart by faith. When you see red hearts today for Valentine’s day, think of the love of Jesus. And now, allow me to conclude with the rest of the Ephesians verse. Allow this Word from God to ring in your heart the rest of this Valentine’s day.
Ephesians 3:17-21 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
Have an awesome and inspired day in Christ!
