Countdown | 7 Days to Revival

I have a favor to ask of you…

40 Days of Increase | Day 31

by Pastor Don Weeks, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

98 of you have subscribed to receive links to these devotions via your cell phone. Others view these 40 Days of Increase devotions on Facebook, and some visit Antioch’s website directly. Some of you have told us that you pass these messages on to others, for which we are grateful.

Now I have a big favor to ask of you.

I would like to ask something personal of you. I hope you do not think of it as a selfish or egotistical request. The favor I ask of you is this: Would you pray for me today? I am reluctant to ask, knowing that you have a mountain of other things to pray about; illnesses, family difficulties, etc. As pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church it is my heartfelt obligation to preach the gospel on a weekly basis, and I need your help today, this Sunday. In reality, I need God’s help.

Today is the Lord’s day. Here, following, is my prayer request to God, and I would be honored—more than honored—if you would hold me up in prayer today as I anticipate preaching the 11:00 am service at Antioch. (By the way, those you who have been doing the daily practical tasks, doing this requested favor would be your only task today.)

Please pray that God would give me His favor, His power, His love, His compassion and His words in the pulpit as I preach. Pray that the Holy Spirit would prepare hearts even during the Sunday school hour and as people drive into church. Pray that any unbelievers in attendance would be convicted of their sin and trust Christ. Pray that we as believers would be full of the Spirit of God. Pray that we, too, as believers would be convicted of our sin, confess it, and desire nothing between our soul and the Savior.

Of course, we should all be praying that the Sunday school teachers and children’s workers are also filled with the Spirit of God to impart His Word to all that are in attendance today. I am asking all those who attend Antioch missionary Baptist church to be in special prayer during the preaching of God’s word today.

Do I have biblical basis for asking this favor?

The apostle Paul asked people to pray for him specifically. He used his letters to the churches, much as I am using this devotional today. After all, this is where I got the idea! After the Apostle Paul explained the importance of putting on the full armor of God, he asked for a favor. He asked the people to pray for him. Here is his request:

Ephesians 6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel.

If the Apostle Paul asked for people to pray for him, I figure it would be a good idea for me to follow his example.  He asked specifically for himself, “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel.” I ask the same of you today.

The one called the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon once said this, “Shall I give you yet another reason why you should pray? I have preached my very heart out. I could not say any more than I have said. Will not your prayers accomplish that which my preaching fails to do? Is it not likely that the Church has been putting forth its preaching hand but not its praying hand? Oh dear friends! Let us agonize in prayer…”

Spurgeon himself gave his church and their prayers as the reason God working through him. It is said that when visitors would come to his church Charles Spurgeon would take them down to the basement located directly underneath the pulpit where a group of believers would be praying during his preaching. He would present the room to the visitors and say, “Here is the powerhouse of this church.”

So I ask again, to you my brothers and sisters in Christ, would you please pray for me as I preach today the glorious gospel of Christ?

I thank you sincerely. Here is my prayer for you today:

I pray that Christ would be increased in your spirit today. I pray that Christ would be increased in your home, and in your family. I pray that Christ would give you boldness and be increased in your witness for him. I pray that Christ would be increased in your service for Him today at your church, whether you be teaching, preaching, or simply being a friend. Whatever you do today, I pray that Christ would keep you safe in His will and fill you with His peace and joy and wisdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I thank you sincerely, in Christ.

Have a blessed and God-inspired Lord’s day today!
