Do It All In His Name

The Bible is profoundly simple, and simply profound. Take Colossians 3:17 for example.

Colossians 3:17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

This verse is simple. Basically it says we should do everything in Jesus’ name, and give Him thanks. But it is way more than that. It is profoundly simple and it is simply profound. It is a comprehensive guide to managing your life. This verse is for every believer, man or women, young or old. It is a guide for the teen feeling stuck in high school, a guide for the President of the United States, and guide for everyone in between.

Let’s break this verse down into three parts. At the same time we will keep this verse focused on today. Remember, our theme for 2017 is HE MUST INCREASE, so we will try to keep it relevant. So, to break down the verse in bite-sized morsels, we would outline it like this:

  1. Whatever we say today should be said in the name of the Lord Jesus.
  2. Whatever we do today should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus.
  3. We should be giving thanks to God all day in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Let’s look at the first one more closely. Let’s say you are a teen and you want Christ to increase in your life at high school. You know that Colossians 3:17 says that whatever you say today should be said in the name of the Lord Jesus. Your selfish heart might want to complain in the morning because you woke up late. You had to rush. You missed breakfast and you wanted to blame your mom or your dad. You wanted to say something mean to your little sister. But you stop yourself because you couldn’t really yell at or blame your mom, dad, or little sister in Jesus’ name.

Let’s say you are a well to do CEO of a successful company and today a fellow employee of the firm makes some derogatory comments about you personally. You’d like to lash out emotionally. But you take a deep breath and recite the words of Colossians 3:17 and realize your rant toward that fellow employee could never be said in the name of the Lord Jesus.

We say prayers in Jesus’ name. We give blessings in His name. We are used to freely using His name in church environment. But God wants us to realize that our lives are supposed to be a prayer. Our entire lives are supposed to be a blessing both to God and our fellow-man. It would make sense then that everything we say should be said in Jesus’ name.

Secondly, not only what we say, but everything we do should be done is Jesus’ name. There is no sane follower of Christ who would ever say that it would make sense to sin in Jesus’ name. If that thought was not so ridiculous it would be blasphemous. And yet, we are supposed to live our lives in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are supposed to do everything we physically perform in the name of the Lord Jesus. Everything includes important tasks as well as the mundane and run-of-the-mill everyday acts. If we are supposed to drive our vehicles in the name of the Lord Jesus, how should we drive? If we are to wash the dishes in the name of the Lord Jesus, how are we supposed to do it? It would seem the proper attitude would be found in the preceding verse:

Colossians 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

I can easily envision myself washing dishes with psalms and hymns playing in my heart. (My wife would probably love to see that more often as well!) But seriously, we can and should be disciples of Colossians 3:17. All we say and all we do should be done in His name.

Lastly, our text verse tells us that we are to be giving thanks to God in Jesus name. We are to do this all day long. We are to act and speak in the name of Jesus. Can you imagine how wonderful a life it would be if we as believers lived out this verse today?

I hereby challenge you, and I challenge myself:

Colossians 3:17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Have an awesome and inspired day in Christ, and remember,

HE MUST INCREASE!
