In Light Of Eternity – Day 7

What if your thoughts and prayers increased for all eternity?

40 Days of Increase | Day 27

by Pastor Don Weeks, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

The opening ceremony of the 1936 Olympics was supposedly the first television broadcast that had a powerful enough signal to break into outer space. These signals, once into space, can travel a long, long way. These waves travel at the speed of light, and in all directions. That first television signal has traveled 81 light years into space. That’s (4.762 x 10 to the 14th power) 476,200,000,000,000 miles! Yes, the signal has diminished in power over all those miles, but the point is once the signal is sent out it keeps on going.

Yesterday we discussed how to gain perspective from one of the greatest promises of all time. It is a promise from God Himself to every one of His children. His children are those who are born again, saved, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ; those who have believed the glorious gospel. The promise we considered yesterday, and the promise we consider again today is,

Ephesians 3:20-21  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

The thought I would like to share with you today is this: Your asking and your thinking is like broadcasting. If you neglect (or refuse) to ask or think, the broadcast power of God does not kick in. No power. No answer. Nothing exceeding or abundant happens. When our thoughts stay low, and we do not even think about how Christ may be increased, or ask how God might be glorified in our lives or in the lives of those around us we initiate nothing with God.

Jesus has instructed us to pray in His name. That is the proper signal. We are to ask for things to happen in Jesus name. We can ask for simple basic things. We can surely think simple and basic thoughts. When we ask and think in Jesus’ name we send out a signal to God that travels faster than light. The signal of asking and thinking in Jesus’ name does not diminish, but grows exceeding abundantly above all we could ever imagine. This promise ought to motivate us to ask and think in Jesus’ name.

This is so amazing. A small thought, a whisper of a prayer is like a stone being tossed into a pond. God can take a small thought, say, for example, for God to use your young son or daughter’s life for His glory. This small thought, this small prayer in Jesus’ name will affect untold future generations. That child can grow in the nurture of God into a humble servant that in turn reaches many people for Christ.

We can think of women in the Bible like Hannah who prayed for a son. God gave to her, and to the world the mighty prophet Samuel that is still influencing lives on earth today. There are other stories of well-known preachers whose parents whispered simple prayers to God and watched Him exceeding abundantly bless. Susannah Wesley prayed with all her 19 of her children. John grew up to be a mighty preacher and her other son Charles wrote over 6,000 hymns. When I first accepted Christ, I fell in love with some of his songs. Some, I had known all my life, like Hark, the Herald Angels Sing. His mother could have never imagined that I and millions of others would love her son’s music over 250 years after she raised him.

Your task for today is simple, and yet, at the same time profound. Ask and think today in Jesus name. Keep asking and keep thinking. Remember, if we refuse to ask and think there is no exceeding abundant increase. If we neglect to ask and think, nothing is increased. Keep sending Him the holy broadcast! Ask and think in Jesus’ name and watch Him increase, exceeding abundantly above all you or I could ever imagine.

PS: Don’t forget to write out and recite Colossians 3:16-17. Only 13 days left to hide it in your heart!

He Must Increase, Antioch’s theme for 2017, taken from John 3:30. The devotions explore this theme and how Jesus must increase in our lives, other’s lives, and in the homes, churches and nations of the entire world.
