Banging on pots and pans with your mother’s wooden spoon is fun! Well, maybe you enjoyed it when you were a baby. But now, hopefully, you have matured. You have grown. Your capacity for entertainment and exploration has increased. You need more. You want to go deeper. You want to grow.
At first, you didn’t realize it. You didn’t know you were growing. You didn’t have a clue what your personal capacity was, or that it would increase. But, soon the pots and pans were not as much fun. Your capacity had grown. Your parents knew this would happen (parents are so smart) and bought you a fantastic kid’s drum set for your fifth birthday. When you were ten your mom brought you to piano lessons. You had to learn to read music. Maybe you were like me and wanted to quit. Maybe you complained and whined about it so much your parents let you quit. I don’t know about you, but I wish I wasn’t such a foolish child! My brain and heart (and parents) were ready for me to grow. But because of a poor decision I turned down the opportunity to increase my capacity. I put up resistance to growth. Now that I am older I have allowed other parts of daily life to strangle that capacity.
How about your capacity for Christ? Listen to this lamentation by the writer of Hebrews:
Hebrews 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
And Jesus wanted to tell more to His disciples but He knew they needed an increase in their capacity to bear what He had to say to them.
John 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
3 Ways To Increase Your Capacity For Christ.
- Understand that you are responsible. Have you ever considered your capacity for Christ? Are you still banging pots and pans when Christ wants you to be more for Him? Your growth is up to you.
- Use everything that God has given you to grow your capacity for Christ. There is not enough time in this short devotion to recount all the advantages with which Christ has equipped us when we trusted Him as Savior. As Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Do not neglect the basics of time in God’s Word, time in prayer, and reliance on His Holy Spirit to grow your capacity for Jesus. After all, listen to Jesus complete His thought from John 16:12-13, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
- Realize that God wants your capacity for Christ to grow. 2 Peter 3:18 tell us, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
So, do it. Grow your capacity for Christ today. Remember,
HE MUST INCREASE!
