Living in You

—by Don Weeks, Pastor, Antioch Baptist Church, Ona, West Virginia

Life is a mystery. We are a mystery.

Scientists cannot explain human consciousness. Philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists, biologists and others have their so-called definitions. Still, what does it mean to be alive?

Jesus said that His words were alive.

John 6:63b “…the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Now, listen to how incredibly alive God’s word is:

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is quick…

Time out. This is a plain statement in the Bible that tells us the Word of God is alive. The Old English word quick  has an interesting history of use. Quick means “living, alive, animate,” and is associated with the prefix bio- which form words like biology and biography. The Word of God is alive. Now let’s consider the rest of Hebrews 4:12 and see how incredibly alive is God’s Word:

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is quick (living, alive!), and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Wow! The Word of God is alive. It is its own Entity. It is a Being. It is God! The Word of God is God.

  • Jesus said His Words were spirit and life.
  • The verse in Hebrews tells us clearly that God’s word is alive. It is living and powerful, a sharp and piercing discerner of thoughts.

The Bible tells us to let Jesus’ living and powerful words into our lives. God wants Christ’s words to live in us, grow in us, and change us.

Colossians 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Life is a mystery. We are a mystery. We hold an even greater mystery within us when we allow the Word of Christ to live within us. It is His Word that saves us. After we are saved, it is His Word that comforts us, cures us, encourages us and even corrects us. His Word dwells with us, lives with us, because His Word is Alive. Allow the word of Christ to dwell in you richly and He will increase in your life, and the lives of those around you.
